Claudine Langille and Silas Hamilton

Claudine Langille and Silas Hamilton are 2/5 of Vermont’s rockin’ Celtic band, Gypsy Reel. They are both multi-instrumentalists (Claudine plays mandolin, tenor banjo and guitar, Silas plays DADGAD guitar, fiddle, mandolin and button accordion), and both sing.

Claudine is best know as a member of Touchstone, Triona NiDhomhnaill’s award winning Celtic/Appalachian fusion band that toured in the 1980s. More recently, she was mandolin player in The Fiddletree ensemble, a group of musicians from Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the US, led by Cape Bretoner Otis Tomas, who wrote the title track of Touchstone’s first album, The New Land. The Fiddletree played at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow Scotland as part of the 2015 Celtic Connections Festival, and also played at Celtic Colours Festival  in Cape Breton Nova Scotia. (For the fascinating story of how Otis Tomas created a family of instruments from the mighty maple he named The Fiddletree, see ) Claudine has been a featured performer on Fiona Ritchie’s radio show Thistle and Shamrock (you can hear the show on Claudine’s website and has been played on Brian O’Donovan’s Celtic Sojourns show. She teaches at Connecticut Academy of Irish Music and privately.

Silas Hamilton grew up in rural Vermont. Coming from a musical family he was steeped in Old-time and New England music through parties and contra dances. Silas met Claudine at an Irish music session and started taking mandolin lessons from her. His love of the music grew, and he was inspired by the playing of Micheal O;Domhnaill and John Doyle to play DADGAD guitar, and Kevin Burke and Andre Brunet to play fiddle. Silas plays with a driving yet intricate rhythm, captivating audiences from ireland to Australia. He just returned from a 2 month stay in Ireland jamming with the greats. He is equally adept at Quebecois rhythms, and sings with the group Village Harmony.
