Dirty Bird, Gentle Temper, TOLEDO

Dirty Bird

Dirty Bird hails from the concrete woodlands of New York City, and consists of Christie Belanger, Melissa Escudero, Natasha Thweatt, Julia Conrad, Nick Katz, John Crisan and Blake Suben. Though the band is young, each member has spent their lives grounded in song. With roots going back to New York’s famous LaGuardia High School, Dirty Bird began in 2016 as the indisputable forces of music compelled long time artists and friends to reconnect. Since then, the band has presented powerful performances to a variety of venues around the Northeast, including Rockwood Music Hall, Muchmore’s and Radio Bean. Dirty Bird brings both new and established audiences honest, perceptive lyrics interlaced with effervescent melodious arrangements. Soulful, harmonious and ever-evolving, Dirty Bird offers a unique sound that redefines what it means to be a folk band.

Gentle Temper

Gentle Temper is Ryan Meier and Marion Earley, an ocean-folk duo with a blues tide from the bayous of Boston, MA. Marion and Ryan met while attending college in Boston and began writing and playing together in their final year.  Their live sound builds on a sturdy foundation of lyrical storytelling & animated harmonies.

GT_ have opened for nationally touring acts LOLO, Bombadil, The Ballroom Thieves, and 2014 NPR Favorite new artist The Family Crest.  They have had the pleasure of performing at the annual Chikombuso Foundation for Widows & Orphans at the Jonathan Edwards Vineyard in July 2017.

The pair released “Sleep It Off: The Live EP” in December of 2017 alongside a coinciding documentary-style video. They are currently working on their first full length album, due out later this year.

“Wistful, harmony-drenched balladeers of the modern condition, these folks may become your new local favorites.” - Aeronaut Allston

“...elegant performances… harmony-laced… earnest… smokey folk…”

Here is a relatively endearing story: Ten years ago Daniel and Jordan of Toledo were 12 years old, separately busking in a small port town in north east Massachusetts and rather than compete with one another, they joined forces. Adorable of course but what has resulted from that preteen meeting is a musical chemistry that is clearly forged through day after day, year after year collaboration now expressed in their underground indie folk band Toledo.

There is an underlying DIY esthetic that can be overshadowed by the blatant talent of the band. There is a relate-ablity in the lyrics that doesn’t give one the sense that their debut effort is actually a concept album analyzing the origins of mythological characters such as Hesperus, St. Sebastian, and Polyhymnia.

Daniel and Jordan’s dynamic and impressive vocals, difficult to tell apart from the years of honing their craft together; emote without effort. Toledo delivers satisfying yet surprising melodic and lyrical choices that draw from influences ranging from Radio Head and Real Estate to Nick Drake and Feist. These early 20’s multi instrumentalist have proven with their at times dreamy and sometimes raucous debut album that they are ready to ascend from the street to the stage.
